Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (Ral.) is asked if we can regain our innocence or purity after committing sins. He responds by explaining that mind and desire search and collect what is unclean. This story of our attraction to dirty things is recorded inside of us. As long as we have a body, this story will be with us. But as soon as wisdom dawns, we can clear the storeroom of the mind of this dirt. Each time the memory of it visits us, we must seek refuge in God and drive the karma out through wisdom and our good qualities. Each time we get assailed by these thoughts, we have to chase away shaitān and ask for God’s forgiveness and protection. If we continue to do this, our hearts can become pure again, and our sins will be forgiven.
