Who is God?
September 11, 1973
Dr. Carroll Nash, Parapsychologist: Is there anything that Bawa Muhaiyaddeen would like to tell me that would be of benefit to me or to other people?
Translator: In which way? Physically or…?
Dr Nash: In any way he would judge that I could benefit most from what he might tell me that I could comprehend, understand, and appreciate.
Bawa Muhaiyaddeen(Ral.): There is one Truth—God’s Power. This great Truth cannot be destroyed by anything. His Power consists of His beauty, His qualities, His justice, His peacefulness, His unselfish compassion, the duty He does by working without taking anything for Himself, the duty through which He sacrifices Himself for the sake of other lives. Without any anger, He sustains everything with tolerance, peace, and patience. Regarding all lives as His own life, He faithfully provides food for them. He provides their food with qualities of tolerance and forbearance. The duty we must do is to develop His three thousand peaceful qualities within ourselves—that is our primary duty. The duty we must first do is to develop God’s qualities.
If a tiger is taught well and its intellect trained, it will not catch and kill other animals. If we keep giving it our food, it will not leap upon other creatures and seize them. After it is trained, it will no longer go into the jungle to eat animals. Similarly, if we learn God’s qualities first of all, we will not harm other lives. We must first learn those qualities and then also teach them to others.
God has no form. He has no shadow. There is nothing similar to Him. He has neither wife nor child. He is neither darkness nor light. He is not the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars. There is a Power, a Power able to control everything, all the moons, the stars, the suns. It is a Power that can burn through all other powers. It is a Power that pervades everything from the atom to all of the universes, a Power no one can see. If we want to see it, we must realize that it is a thing that has no limit, that there is nothing like it. It has no help. It is Alone, Original, an endless Point that extends from the time before creation to its end. A Power that has no language, no religion, no race, no black, no white. It is a Power, a Point, that exists within every creation.
It has no mouth: It will speak through our mouths. It has no eyes: It will see with our eyes. It has no ears: It will answer the questions we hear with our ears in the world. It has no nose: from within us, It will take in fragrances with our noses, just as we do. It has no tongue with which to speak: It will speak with our tongues. It has no hands: It will cause our hands to give and receive. It has no legs: It will walk throughout all the universes. Such is that Power.
To see that Power [we must realize that] the mind will not see that Power. The mind has the form of the elements, earth, fire, water, air, and ether. It has the form of the senses, the form made of the essence of the spirits, the form of desire, the form of maya. Therefore, mind and desire cannot pray to God. God is the Reality mind and desire cannot see. It is beyond them.
If we want to see that Reality and know It, we have to understand ourselves.
Wisdom is the only thing that can understand It. To know God, we must develop His qualities. For that there is a separate, unique Form—His beauty. God cannot be seen. God’s qualities are His beauty. The Light that shines forth from those qualities is His Power. It is called a Power. His qualities are His Form. That is God. We must endeavor to take on that Form: I am nothing. I do not exist. Those qualities are God, Man-God. When I am nothing, when I do not exist, then God will act with those qualities. The Form comes when the qualities come. When I do not exist, that Form is God’s Form. The Power that comes from It is God, the Prince of God, my son!
He who has obtained the beauty of the qualities of God and taken on that Form will be nothing—there is no I. When the earth, fire, water, air, and ether have died away from him, when mind and desire have perished, when only the qualities of God have grown within him, that is the beauty of God, that is the Prince of God. The Power within It is called the Prince of God, the heir to the kingdom of God. He is the one who is called “son” in the kingdom of God. Our duty must be to develop those qualities.
Thus, we must first teach the qualities. We must teach wisdom through the qualities.
There are seven kinds of wisdom: Perception, Awareness, Intellect, Assessment, Wisdom, Discerning Wisdom, and Divine Luminous Wisdom. It is with these seven kinds of wisdom that God can be seen. God is not something that can be seen through science. This is not something that can be done with knowledge, education, religion, race, or language. It cannot be seen with mind and desire or their prayers. Only God can see God.
If only God can see God, what is God?
God is God’s qualities. Those qualities are called God. It is the qualities that are called God in anyone in whom those qualities appear. When the Form of those qualities appears, it is God who is there. He is there. It is through this that God sees God. When he takes the Form of God, he sees God there. We must teach wisdom and these qualities. When we understand this, we understand God. Do this, my child.
Dr Nash: Would you tell Bawa that I understand what he says, and I agree with what he says. Are his teachings written down anywhere that I might read them?
Translator: There are three books in English. One was published here, and two from Ceylon. There are quite a number of other books which will be published in the near future—a book of songs which will be out in about a week or ten days, songs that he has sung, and there are all these discourses that are being made into book form, translated into English, which will be out very soon—you can have them in a month or two.
Dr Nash: His teachings are new to me. I have never read this particular thing that he says, this philosophy. I feel that it is correct and true.
Translator: Yes. Bawangal has come to the States only last year. In Ceylon, he has been, in his own way, very silently going among the people. He really came into contact with the outer world of mankind only recently.
Dr Nash: Did he have a guru? Did he have a teacher himself?
Translator: Shall I ask him that?
Dr. Nash: I imagine he has answered it before…
Bawa Muhaiyaddeen(Ral.): I had a Guru.
Dr Nash: I just wondered if he developed all this himself…
Bawa Muhaiyaddeen(Ral.): I am very old in years. I did have a Guru. He was not like those gurus they have in the world, but a remarkable, extremely good Guru. At the requisite time, he gives the requisite answers, the requisite lessons. It is too difficult for everyone to obtain. A blessing is needed, a real blessing, and God’s compassionate grace.
It cannot be done if we speak. He must say what needs to be said through whatever needs to say it. If we wish to speak of God, God Himself must come to speak. If we wish to speak of the ambiyā’ [the prophets], the ambiyā’ themselves must come to speak. If we wish to speak of heavenly beings such as Gabriel(A.S.), Gabriel(A.S.) himself must come to speak. And when they speak, we must see them and understand—they must be understood by wisdom. If we wish to speak of Jesus(A.S.), Jesus(A.S.) himself must come to speak. If we wish to speak of Moses(A.S.), Moses(A.S.) himself must come to speak. And they will have to accept the consequences for the mistakes and the achievements.
If they make a mistake, they will have to accept the consequences. If good comes from it, they will have to accept it. If they make a mistake, they will have to accept the consequences. If we wish to speak of Muhammad(Sal.), Muhammad(Sal.) himself must come to speak. If we wish to speak of Adam(A.S.), Adam(A.S.) himself must come to speak. If we wish to speak of Noah(A.S.), Noah(A.S.) himself must come to speak, to tell his story, his subject. If we wish to speak of Abraham(A.S.), Abraham(A.S.) himself must come to speak. If we wish to speak of David(A.S.), David(A.S.) himself must come to speak. Each one must come to speak about his own subject.
It is a microphone. When the sound is their sound, the microphone hears that sound. We are nothing. What is in it for us? They each say their own words. Speak like that. It is beautiful that way. Then we are nothing and we can listen to the subjects described by each of them.
We do not want the praise. We do not want the blame. We do not want the mistakes. We must finish doing our duty. If we proceed like that, it will be good.
At one time the world will praise you and give you a title. The next time it will condemn you, telling you what you said was wrong. At one time it will elevate you, at the next it will lower you. We should not place our faith in it. The world will encourage us to climb, telling us there is fruit at the top of the tree. If we place our faith in what they say and start to climb, they will bring a ladder when we can’t go higher, give us a title, put a garland on us, and elevate us. They will tell us the best fruits are at the top of the tree. As soon as we get to the top, they will take back the ladder!
What should we do? We will have to fall from the top because we would not know how to climb down. We will have to fall from the height to which they raised us and die. They will take away the ladder. That is what the world will offer us. We must not place our faith in it and we must not depend upon it to climb. If we stay down low on the ground, it will be much better. We do not need this danger.
Dr Nash: What has Bawa spoken about reincarnation?
Bawa Muhaiyaddeen(Ral.): If a beetle falls into fire, what will it do? It will become fire. When it becomes fire, it will not come back. It is fire—it has been annihilated by fire. The fire has consumed the beetle and the beetle has consumed the fire. It will not return. If, however, the beetle does not enter the fire and it remains intact, it will return.
Man’s Form is God’s qualities, that Form, not this one. There is another, separate Form in which the soul abides. We need to extract it. That soul needs to be extracted. What is it? It is God’s qualities. The soul must be extracted from that Form.
The soul has no shadow. Where did that soul come from? The rays of God’s Light. It is a Power, a ray of Light. It has no form. It is not something that can be discovered by science. It has no shadow. Everything else has a shadow, but the soul has no shadow. God has no shadow. Truth has no shadow. Wisdom has no shadow. This treasure must be extracted as a separate thing. This is God’s treasure. This is God’s truth, God’s treasure. It is separate.
The physical body consists of earth, fire, water, air, and ether. They are the treasures of maya. The physical body is made of earth. It is night. It is a glitter. It is an act. These are the scenes, these are the curtains. One is night, the other is Light. One is false, the other is true. One is a delusion, the other is the radiance of wisdom.
How did that come to be? The physical body belongs here. It is a cooperative store with five shareholders. Among the shareholders, there is a school, God’s creation. Man is separate, he has a separate section. Man is the section of Man-God, God-Man. Such is his Power. That Power, that Body, that Section, that Worship, that Prayer, and those Abilities all belong to a separate section.
God’s creation contains animals, birds, snakes, rats, cats, and each of their various qualities, kinds of beauty, and actions. They exist in so many ways. There are so many kinds of sounds, music, and melodies in God’s creation. God is a Scientist, an Artist, and a Potter. He is a learned Pundit. He is a Poet. He is a Gnāni. He is the Magician who brought everything to life in the beginning. He is the One who can make all treasures. He is the one who has known, learned, and experienced everything. He is the One who has seen the ādi [the beginning] and the anādi [the beginninglessness], the One to whom they belong.
God existed like that, studied, and from His treasury, His immense treasury, selected the Power for which there is no equal anywhere. He has an immense treasury. He holds a treasury of grace, a treasury of knowledge, a treasury of science, a treasury of ignorance, a treasury of creation, a treasury of money, wealth, maya, the world, the eighteen thousand universes, and the knowledge that does everything appropriately. All fields of study are there: earth studies, fire studies, water studies, air studies, ether studies, color studies, glitter studies, maya studies, studies of each atom, the powers of the atoms. He is the One who saw and experienced all the explanations within Himself and knew them. The One who knows all the astrological predictions, the astrology, the death, and the birth of all creation is God. After He finished creating everything else, He filtered, filtered, filtered, filtered, and filtered it, and created the human being from that filtrate. He filtered, filtered, filtered, filtered, and filtered creation. The final filtrate that could hold His beauty was man.
Of that filtrate, God said, “I am the secret of man, and man is My secret! I have placed all My wealth into him—he is My bank. I have placed everything I have made into the bank. I have placed all My powers into him. I am his wealth, and he is My wealth. If anyone realizes Me, it will be man who must do so. If anyone learns about Me, if anyone studies My lessons, it will be he who must study.
“What he gains from his studies will be Me. Then I am he, and he is Me. I am his wealth, and My wealth is within him. He is My bank, and I am his bank. The wealth he needs is Me. I have placed My wealth into him. It is man who must spend it. It is he who must distribute My grace.” That is what God said.
When he accepts that wisdom, those actions, and that point of I am nothing, when wisdom understands and when Discerning Wisdom knows, he will have no rebirth. There will be no I, no you. He will have no religion or race. He will have no color or differences. If he does not possess them, just as God does not possess them, there will be no rebirth for him. Only he can be called human.
If he has not realized this wisdom or learned these lessons, he cannot be called human. He can only be called human because of the truth and wisdom within him. You cannot call him human merely by looking at his face and body. There are people who are like monkeys. There are so many animals who are like people. They cannot all be called human beings. He can be called human only when he has the human wisdom that is able to see man. If he does not possess this wisdom, if he possesses animal wisdom, animal qualities…
The eighteen thousand universes are within man. All the externally visible creations exist formlessly within him as shadows. There is a world outside and a world inside. There is an ocean outside, and there is an ocean inside. There is a satan outside, and there is a satan inside. There is maya outside and maya inside. There are scenes outside and scenes inside. There are demons outside and demons inside. There are lions outside and the qualities of the lion here inside. There is a bull outside and a bull here. There is a tiger outside, and the tiger’s quality of leaping upon and seizing others is inside. There is a crow outside and a crow inside. There is an eagle outside and an eagle inside. There is a great sea outside, the Red Sea, and there is also a Red Sea [of blood ties inside]. Everything we see outside, all the many birds we have seen outside are here. The world and the eighteen thousand universes are here.
The angels or heavenly beings we may have seen outside also exist within man. There are angels and heavenly beings within us. They exist as shadow forms. These are the form shapes and those are the shadow shapes. They work as shadow shapes. Whoever takes on the qualities of a demon is a demon, not human. Man’s body is a cooperative store. If he contains the qualities of a satan, he is a satan. If he possesses the qualities of a lion, he is a lion. If he possesses the qualities of an elephant, trumpeting, Ah! as he breaks everything, he is an elephant. If he possesses the qualities of a snake, striking and biting, he is a snake. If he possesses the qualities of a cow, butting everything, he is a cow. If he possesses the qualities of a horse, jumping, running, kicking, bucking, he is a horse. If he possesses the qualities of maya, looking here and there and acting accordingly,
he is maya.
If he has the quality of satan, he is darkness. The form man takes is determined by the qualities with which he acts. You can identify his form through his qualities and actions. If he is arrogant, that is satan’s quality. If he is vengeful, that is satan’s quality. If he is jealous, that is satan’s quality. If he has desire, that is the quality of maya. If he is deluded, that is a quality of ignorance.
Therefore, we must discover who is human. Man is not in the majority. If you look at the majority among the people of the world, there are very few human beings in God’s creation. The animals are the majority, with many more votes.
There is only One God, and like that, man is similarly rare. In this kingdom, in this earth-world, there are very few human beings. They are very few. The majority does not allow them to live in this world. It is rare to find one human being in ten million. Yet he will not receive even one vote from the majority.
He who becomes human like that will have no rebirth—he will not come back. He does not come back, nor is he destroyed.
A bull must go to the table. They force the bull to pull the plough and then they put it on the table. After it goes to the table, it has to return. It has to go down and come out below, through hell’s gateway. It is put in from above and then it has to go down. This is the way the animals go and come. They must go to hell and come back from hell. This is the way it is.
It is not like that for man. He is very precious and rare.
Dr. Nash: I think that he goes into devotion about 12 o’clock, doesn’t he? I don’t want to stay too long. Well, it’s almost five of twelve now, so… I’m very much impressed by what Bawa has said and I appreciate the time that he’s given me and that he has permitted me to come listen to him.
